The 7 Areas of Learning and Development

The EYFS curriculum is divided into seven key areas, split into two categories:

Prime Areas (crucial for early development)

1. Communication and Language – Developing speaking, listening, and understanding.

2. Physical Development – Encouraging coordination, control, and movement, as well as healthy choices.

3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Building confidence, managing emotions, and forming positive relationships.

Specific Areas (strengthened through the prime areas)

4. Literacy – Introducing reading and writing through stories, songs, and mark-making.

5. Mathematics – Exploring numbers, shapes, patterns, and simple problem-solving.

6. Understanding the World – Learning about people, places, technology, and the environment.

7. Expressive Arts and Design – Encouraging creativity through music, art, dance, and imaginative play.
