  • MFL Curriculum Offer - Intent

At High Wycombe C of E School, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is designed to inspire children to become confident, curious and courageous communicators in an increasingly interconnected world.

In line with the 2014 National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all children develop the ability to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. They learn to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, while continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. Our pupils are also taught to write for different purposes and audiences using a range of grammatical structures, and to develop an appreciation of literature in the language studied.

Learning a Modern Foreign Language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience. It enables pupils to build strong communication and literacy skills, laying the foundation for further language learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond. Children develop linguistic competence, deepen their understanding of how language works, and explore the connections and contrasts between the language being studied, English, and any other home languages they may speak.

Through language learning, our pupils grow in their awareness of our multilingual and multicultural world, developing empathy, tolerance and respect for others. It fosters a broader understanding of global citizenship and encourages children to engage positively with cultural diversity, both in the classroom and in the wider world.
