  • MFL Curriculum Offer - Implementation

At High Wycombe C of E School, Modern Foreign Languages are taught weekly across Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme of work. This high-quality programme ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum and provides a clear progression of skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

To ensure continuity and appropriate coverage in our single-form entry setting, we have introduced a three-year rolling programme. This allows all pupils to access a full and coherent language curriculum, with a phased transition to Spanish across the key stage.

Each Language Angels unit is taught over a six-week period and is structured to ensure all four language strands are covered. In Lower Key Stage 2, there is a greater emphasis on listening and reading, while in Upper Key Stage 2, the focus shifts towards developing more confident writing and speaking. This ensures age-appropriate progression and balanced skill development across the key stage.

Lessons are interactive and engaging, using a variety of teaching strategies, including songs, games, role play, storytelling, digital resources and visual supports. Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND and EAL, ensuring that language learning remains inclusive, enjoyable and accessible.

Progression is embedded within the scheme, with increasing emphasis on writing and speaking as pupils move into Upper Key Stage 2. Assessment opportunities are built into each unit and used formatively by teachers to identify next steps in learning.

Our curriculum is designed not only to build linguistic competence, but also to promote intercultural understanding and personal development. Pupils are encouraged to take risks, persevere through challenge, and engage respectfully with the wider world - developing as strong, courageous, and compassionate communicators.
