    Music at High Wycombe Church of England School

    At High Wycombe C of E, Music is an integral part of our curriculum because it nurtures creativity, expression and joy, while building confidence, discipline and teamwork. Music enriches our lives and connects us to different cultures, communities and traditions, enabling pupils to appreciate beauty, emotion and diversity through sound. We challenge our pupils to be strong and courageous in developing their musical skills, whether performing, composing or listening, so they become confident, resilient and expressive musicians who approach music with curiosity, creativity and enjoyment.

    Our aim is for every child to experience the joy and power of music, beginning with strong foundations in singing, rhythm and pitch, and progressing to performing and composing with imagination and skill. We aim for our pupils to develop an understanding and appreciation of different musical styles and traditions, and to express themselves with confidence and creativity through voice and instruments. We want every child to recognise music as a universal language that speaks to the heart and mind, fostering emotional well-being and social connection.

    Our Music curriculum is rich, broad and inspiring, designed to develop a lifelong love of music and the skills to engage with it meaningfully. We provide a safe and supportive environment where all children can flourish as confident and capable musicians. Through music, our vision is to nurture:

    • Enthusiasm and enjoyment for listening to and making music;

    • Fluency, accuracy and creativity in performing and composing;

    • Understanding of musical elements and the ability to apply these when creating and responding to music;

    • Resilience to practise, improve and take pride in musical achievements;

    • The ability to connect music to worship, culture and the wider world, enriching life and learning.
