HWCE Butterfly Curriculum

Inspiring Conservation Through Outdoor Learning

At High Wycombe C of E School, we are proud to champion local conservation through our unique Butterfly Curriculum, which forms an important part of our Forest School and Outdoor Learning programme. We believe every child can become a caretaker of the environment, developing a deep appreciation for the wonderful world God has provided.

Working Together for Nature

We are delighted to work in close partnership with Chiltern Rangers, in developing an environment and a curriculum that gives every class the opportunity to learn about - and care for - range of butterfly species found in High Wycombe and across Buckinghamshire.

We were so helpful to Formws and Vinci Facilities for their help with purchasing resources and providing volunteers to work with Chiltern Rangers and our Children to create this. Please follow the link to see our before and after photos below.

What Does the Butterfly Curriculum Involve?

  • Each class studies two butterfly species:
One common and one endangered. Pupils explore their life cycles, habitats, and the vital role they play in nature as part of the Science curriculum and our Courageous Advocacy work.
  • Hands-on conservation:
Each class is responsible for cultivating and maintaining food plants for their butterflies in dedicated areas of our school grounds.
  • Making a wider impact:
Pupils help transplant these plants to other local areas, supporting butterfly populations beyond the school gates.
  • Ongoing learning:
Each year, pupils build on their knowledge and practical skills, helping our school grounds flourish with wildflowers and attracting more butterflies.

Why Butterflies?

Butterflies are important pollinators, helping wildflowers grow and supporting healthy meadows. Sadly, Britain’s butterfly numbers have dropped dramatically in recent decades due to climate change and human activity. While larger animals often get more attention in conservation, butterflies and other small creatures play vital roles in keeping our environment balanced and beautiful.

Our Hopes for the Future

Through our Butterfly Curriculum, we aim to nurture a generation of conservationists who will care for our planet for years to come. We invite all members of our school community—staff, pupils, governors, parents, and the wider community—to support and encourage our children as they learn, grow, and make a positive difference.
