Common Butterfly - Green Veined White

Rare Butterfly - White Letter Hairstreak
On our first butterfly afternoon, we learnt about the Green Veined White and the White Letter Hairstreak.
The White Letter Hairstreak has a white letter W on the underside of their wings. Their wingspan 25-35mm. They rely on the Wych Elm Tree for their habitat.
The Green Veined White has white wings with darker tips and distinct green veins on the underside. Their wingspan is 40-52mm. Their food source is garlic mustard, cuckooflower, hedge mustard and charlock.
We made a tree using paper origami butterflies to show how important trees are for the survival of the White Letter Hairstreak.
Year 4 helped to plant a wych elm tree in our school grounds to support the habitat for the White Letter Hairstreak.
