    Autumn 1

This term, Year 1 have been learning about food waste and how we can help look after our world. As part of our courageous advocacy project, we explored what food waste is, where it comes from, and how it affects our school community.

We went on a walk around the school and playground to investigate where food is usually thrown away and to spot the different bins we have. The children looked carefully to see whether lunches were being wasted and thought about how much food might be thrown away each day.

Our next step will be to think about how we can make positive changes to reduce food waste in our school. Year 1 are very excited to continue their project and become “Food Waste Heroes” for our school!

    Autumn 2

This half term, Year 1 have continued their important work on reducing food waste in our school. To help us understand the problem better, we spoke to members of our kitchen staff to find out which foods are most often left uneaten. The children listened carefully and asked thoughtful questions about what happens to the food that isn’t used.

We also visited other classes to ask pupils what foods they enjoyed most at lunchtime and which items they often left. The children suggested alternative options they might prefer, helping us collect ideas that could support our school in reducing waste.

Year 1 are now using all this information to think about how we can make lunchtime choices better for everyone while helping our environment. We are excited to keep working as responsible, caring “Food Waste Champions”!
