GODLY PLAY OVERVIEW

AUTUMN TERM 2023

Here is a short description of the stories covered by the children in their Godly Play sessions this term:

Holy Family (The Forever Story) (Year R)

This is the first story encountered by Children in Godly play. It tells the story of the Nativityand will be familiar to many of the children, but it puts it in the context of Jesus the Eternal Saviour, hence “The Forever Story”.

The Creation (Year 1)

This material presents the creation of the world as a Gift to us from God and one we should cherish. It allows the children to understand the supremacy of God, a concept that underpins everything we do in Godly Play.

The Sower (Year 2, 3, 4, 5)

This is a parable and like all parables in Godly Play is presented in a golden box. This signifies that parables are precious and a present to us from God, and the boxes all have lids signifying that we can’t always “see into” or understand a parable.

The parable shows describes a sower sowing seed in various places, illustrating how God’s word and his promises to us should be allowed to grow and flourish but can be ignored or lose their significance in the business of our everyday life. The presentation encourages the children to think about the imagery of the parable, which may to discussion about what “seeds”, “weeds”, “stony ground” and “harvest” are relevant to children today.

Paul (Year 6)

(Saul’s Discovery)

This lesson focusses on the life of Saul, later Paul, who started his life actively opposing followers of Jesus but following the dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus he became one of Christianity’s greatest and most ardent advocates. We will discuss the power of the Holy Spirit within Paul’s ministry and how we can use Paul’s example to inspire us when faced with challenges and hardships of our own.
