The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:

• Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

• Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

• Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

The learning of a Modern Foreign Language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. It enables them to develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.

They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how languages work and explore differences and similarities between the foreign language and English (and any other home language they may be familiar with).

Learning another language raises awareness of our multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. It helps to promote tolerance, understanding and empathy to their peers in this country and abroad and to embed the values of equality and diversity.
