Courageous Advocacy

Save the Bees!

For our Courageous Advocacy Project, Year 1 have chosen to support bees! We read 'Betsy Buglove Saves the Bees' which inspired us to do our best to help these fuzzy little insects! Bees are so important to help us have tasty fruit and vegetables to eat and beautiful flowers, however we learned that the number of UK bee species has fallen. Of the UK’s 26 bumblebee species, 2 are extinct and 6-8 more species have seen major declines.

Autumn 1

After identifying a problem in our area, we focussed on investigating and learning as much as we could about bees. We learned fun facts about why bees are so important and why they need our help. We made tissue paper bees to put in the windows of our classroom to remind us every day about our project!

Autumn 2

We discovered that bees do a little dance when they pollinate flowers. We practised doing bee dances to 'The Flight of the Bumblebee' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, to remind us of all the hard work bees do! We then made some wildflower seed balls using soil, flower, water and wild flowers, ready to plant in the spring. They were very messy!

Spring 1

We looked at an aerial map of our school group to select the best area to plant our seed balls that we made in Autumn 2. We chose the soil area in the Millenium Garden. We planted and watered the seed balls and hope that it will bring lots of bees to the area. We also began to learn about different types of bees, as well as bee impersonators and created a bee identification guide so that we can try to track and record the types and amounts of different bees in High Wycombe.
