Supporting Maths At Home
Mental Maths
- Practice tables daily (Up to 10x10) – Use games e.g. bingo
Calculation
- Children should be able to add/subtract two digit by three digit numbers (567+64), multiply/divide two digit by one digit numbers (34x7). Give children word problems in the context of money and ask them to use the appropriate calculation method. E.g. ‘If I buy a TV for £345 and a DVD player £61 how much do I spend?’
- Use the calculation methods booklet for our school to support your children. Check with your child which method they are using.
Shape
- Play guess the 2D shape. Describe a 3D shape by its properties (Edges, Corners) and see if your child can guess the shape you’re describing.
- Ask children to create a pattern with 1 line of symmetry.
- Play battleships in a one quadrant grid.
Measures
- Weight/Capacity – Cook with your children. Ask them to read the scales/measuring jug. Ask children to estimate the weight or capacity of items around the home.
- Length – Ask children to estimate and measure the length of items around the home e.g. tables, T.V., bedroom.
- Time – Have a selection of analogue and digital clocks for the children to tell the time. Ask the children to convert between analogue and digital including using 12 hour am and pm and 24 hour time.
Handling Data
- Use information that children enjoy e.g. football scores and ask them to create a graph to show the information.
