Spring Writing Challenges
Complete one of the challenges and bring it in to school - fantastic pieces of writing could receive silver awards!
1. Create a Character Profile (Descriptive)
- Task: Create a character for a story you would like to write. You should give your character a name, age, personality traits, likes, dislikes, and a backstory.
- Challenge: Include at least one surprising trait or secret about the character.
2. Write a Letter to Your Future Self (Letter)
- Task: You should write a letter to yourself 10 years from now, describing your life, goals, and dreams.
- Challenge: Include predictions about what your life might look like and advice for your future self.
3. Write a Short Mystery Story (Narrative)
- Task: Write a short mystery story where the main character solves a puzzle or a crime.
- Challenge: Make sure to include clues that the reader can follow along with, but don’t reveal the answer until the very end.
4. Design an Alien (Descriptive/Recount)
- Task: Describe an alien you have invented, including its appearance, abilities, home planet, and how it communicates.
- Challenge: Write a diary entry from the perspective of the alien, sharing an adventure on Earth.
5. Write a Dialogue Between Two Opposing Characters (Narrative)
- Task: Write a conversation between two characters who disagree on something important.
- Challenge: Show how the characters try to persuade each other, using powerful language or emotional appeals.
6. Create a Mythical Creature (Descriptive)
- Task: Design a mythical creature, including its name, powers, and habitat.
- Challenge: Write a legend or short story about how the creature came into existence or how it helps (or hinders) humans.
7. Write a Poem About Nature (Poetry)
- Task: Write a poem about the beauty of nature, using vivid imagery and sensory descriptions.
- Challenge: Use at least two different types of figurative language (like metaphors or similes) in the poem.
8. Write a News Article About an Imaginary Event (Information)
- Task: Write a news article about something unusual or extraordinary that has happened in your town or in an imaginary world.
- Challenge: Include a catchy headline, an introduction, quotes from witnesses, and a conclusion.
9. Write a Review of a Book or Film (Information)
- Task: Write a review of a book or film you have recently read or watched.
- Challenge: Include both positive and negative aspects of the book or film, and offer recommendations for who should read or watch it.
10. Create a Superhero (Descriptive/Narrative)
- Task: Design a superhero with special powers and a backstory. What’s their weakness? What motivates them to fight evil?
- Challenge: Write a scene where the superhero faces a difficult choice and must decide what to do.
11. Write a Short Story in One Sentence (Narrative)
- Task: Write a complete short story in just one sentence.
- Challenge: The sentence should have a clear beginning, middle, and end, and create a full picture of the story.
12. Write a Diary Entry from Another Time Period (Recount)
- Task: Write a diary entry as if you were living in a different time period, such as ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, or the future.
- Challenge: Include historical or futuristic details that would be accurate for the time period.
13. The Water Cycle (Expository)
- Task: Write a clear explanation of the water cycle, explaining the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
- Challenge: Use diagrams or visual aids to help illustrate each stage of the cycle.
14. Why Everyone Should Read More Books (Persuasive)
- Task: Write a persuasive letter to your friends convincing them to read more books.
- Challenge: Use logical arguments, examples, and personal experiences to persuade them about the benefits of reading.
15. Explain How to Build a Birdhouse (Expository/Instructions)
- Task: Write a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple birdhouse.
- Challenge: Include helpful tips or tools needed for the project, and explain the importance of each step clearly.
