Mental Maths

  • Practice decimal times tables daily – Use games e.g. bingo

 

Calculation

  • Children should be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. Give children word problems in the context of money and ask them to use the appropriate calculation method. E.g. If a box of chocolates costs £4.67 how much will 12 cost?
  • Use the calculation methods booklet for our school to support your children. Check with your child which method they are using.

 

Shape

  • Play guess the 3D shape. Describe a 3D shape by its properties (Edges, Vertices, Sides) and see if your child can guess the shape you’re describing
  • Play battleships in a four quadrant grid

 

Measures

  • Weight/Capacity ~ Cook with your children. Ask them to read the scales/measuring jug and convert the measurements between litres and millilitres, grams and kilograms.
  • Length ~ Area and perimeter. Ask children to estimate the area and perimeter of different items around the house and when you’re out e.g. the table, football pitch, car parks, T.V. Children to use different measurements and convert between millimetres, centimetres and meters.
  • Time ~ Ask children questions linked to time. E.g. If we set off on our journey now and it takes 48 minutes, what time will we get there?

 

Handling Data

  • Use information that children enjoy e.g. football scores and ask them to calculate the mean, mode, median and range.
