Brain Awareness Day ~ Learning Styles

Brain Awareness Day ~ Learning Styles

During the first few days in year 5 we had Brain Awareness Day!

We learnt all about the brain and how it works so we can make sure that we do our best in year five. If we understand how we learn best and what type of learner we are we can develop our skills to make us the best learners!!

To start with we looked at whether we were right or left brained. If we are left brained we are organised, logical, like facts, like words, like to be on time and like numbers. If we are right brained we are creative, day dream, like images, pictures and sport. There is scale to show how left or right brained you are. The scale goes from 1 to 12. 1 being the most left brained and 12 being the most right brained. We all fall somewhere on the scale.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS WE LEARN BEST WHEN WE USE BOTH SIDES OF OUR BRAIN SO WHETHER WE FAVOUR THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT WE SHOULD DEVELOP THE OTHER SIDE AND BE THE BEST LEARNERS POSSIBLE!!

See our pictures below to see who is left or right brained!

We then looked at whether we are visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learners. Visual learners learning best by seeing, auditory by hearing and kinaesthetic by doing.

Visual learners; make concept maps, draw pictures to show what they are learning, colour code the learning, use graphs, charts diagrams, use highlighters, make posters with lots of colour and pictures and use videos, television. Visual learners will learn well from words and pictures, remember what they see and think in pictures, notice detail (remember if their teacher wears the same earrings/tie 2 days running!), need to see things to remember them and have eyes that look up to the ceiling when they think.

Auditory learners will make up raps, put new learning to music, put learning onto a tape, use rhyme and rhythm, tell others about the learning, make a running commentary, use mnemonics and take part in discussions, debates. Auditory learners will learn well from speaking and listening activities, find it hard to concentrate in a noisy room, talk about what they are doing while they do it and remember what they hear.

Kinaesthetic learners use their body to learn by using actions, walk while they learn, touch, feel and use their emotions, make up mimes, use role play, squeeze a stress ball, learn in cosy, comfy places, make jigsaws from concept maps, make models, put key words on post it notes. Kinaesthetic learners learn well with stories, imagination and feelings, in ‘doing’ activities, want to be up, doing and busy and get fidgety if they have to sit still and listen for too long.

REMEMBER WE ALL HAVE A FAST LANE BUT LEARN BEST BY USING ALL THREE!

We had a great day! Look at the photos below and see how much fun we had!
