Intent

At High Wycombe Church of England Combined School, we believe that with our Christian vision we can enable all of our children to participate and find enjoyment within physical activity.  We will provide them with opportunities to flourish and allow them to feel confident to take on the wider world as a physically active generation.  We will always provide a safe and stimulating physically active learning environment to support their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development.

Within our PE curriculum, we can offer a unique, child centred approach that transforms how we teach PE to include, challenge and support to every individual in a vast amount of physically sports.  We will teach and actively encourage the children to be independent in understanding how to move their bodies, equipment and surrounding areas safely to achieve their differentiated objectives.  We promote a growth mindset within PE, which allows them to be independent, confident and resilient, supporting them to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, maintain a healthy lifestyle and achieve their personal goals.

The aim of physical education in our school is to develop students’ physical competence and knowledge of movement safety, and their ability to use these to perform a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle.  Across each academic year, the children are provided with multiple opportunities to observe and participate in sporting events and competitions where we support a friendly, good sporting behaviour as individuals, within a team and as a spectator.

Consequently, the children understand and embed many of the Learning Behaviours we introduce each term; risk taking, patience, confidence, taking on challenges, self-motivation, determination and support to others.

When in Year 4, all children will have the opportunity to start swimming lessons and will sometimes continue into upper key stage two when the children have become confident in the water, knowing and understanding how to keep safe and also meet the National Curriculum requirements of swimming 25 metres before the end of Year 6.

Together with Science and PSHE, PE will teach children about the importance of healthy living and the importance of a balanced lifestyle.  At High Wycombe Church of England Combined School, we persevere in supporting the children to have the knowledge and skills to embed their physically active lifestyles so they can practise an active lifestyle, benefiting them with their long-term health and wellbeing.
