W/C 6th July

WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY 6th JULY

Hello Year 5. I hope you had a lovely weekend and that you all enjoyed Sports Week last week. Don't forget - if you have any scoresheets to send me from your activities at home, you can still post these on Seesaw. I wonder if any of you celebrated American Independence day on Saturday!? I'm not American at all but I decided it a good excuse to eat some American cuisine - I has corn-dogs and burgers!

Anyway, on to this week (the penultimate week of your time in Year 5!) Please find below activities that you might like to tackle for this week. There is still one activity on Seesaw too if you want to keep in touch with anything.

MATHS - MONDAY 6th JULY - REGULAR & IRREGULAR POLYGONS - YOU NEED A RULER AND A PROTRACTOR

Today you need to understand what is meant by 'regular' and 'irregular' when we are talking about polygons (many sided 2 dimensional shapes).

BBC BItesize has a daily lesson on this with videos and several activities that can help your learning. There is quite a bit to download/print and keep you occupied.

Here's the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zgmcf82

Alternatively/in addition, you can watch the powerpoint below and complete any of the attached worksheets depending on level of challenge.

MATHS - TUESDAY 7th JULY - REASONING ABOUT 3D SHAPES - NETS

A 'Net' is a flat 'plan' of a 3D shape. When yo fold the parts of a net, it creates a different 3D shape. It is important to be able to visualise what the nets of different 3D shapes look like.

MATHS - WEDNESDAY 8th JULY - REFLECTION

Watch the powerpoint and choose your level of challenge from the worksheets. Answers are included - no peeking!

MATHS - THURSDAY 9th JULY 2020 - TRANSLATION

Watch the powerpoint and choose your level of challenge from the worksheets. Answers are included - no peeking!

MATHS - FRIDAY 10th JULY 2020 - ARITHMETIC TESTS

Choose the level of Arithmetic Test suitable for you and complete the questions before checking your answers

ENGLISH FOR THIS WEEK

In school, we are carrying on with reading The Secret Garden and will be watching the next parts of the film. I'm hoping at least some of you at home can continue to enjoy this with us. Once again, your work won't be based on the story but will be following the same objectives we are studying in school.

The activities we are doing this week are all connected with discussion texts so I have posted activities on the website connected with this:

Monday's activity is a comprehension with a non-fiction text from which to answer questions. There are 3 different difficulty levels (look at the star system 1 star = easiest, 3 stars = most challenging) so choose the one best suited to you. The answers are posted too - no sneaky peeking until you've finished the comprehension.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, there is SPAG work connected with modal verbs. It's really important you use these in your writing on Thursday and Friday to show you can use them.

Thursday and Friday is all about writing your own discussion text - choosing from a selection of ideas which are suggested in the powerpoint. There is a lot to read but you should have everything you need here to produce a great balanced argument/discussion.

I hope all this helps.

Have fun writing.

Mr Burgin

Monday 6th July - COMPREHENSION - CHOOSE YOUR CHALLENGE LEVEL, ANSWER THE QUESTIONS AND THEN CHECK YOUR ANSWERS

Tuesday 7th July & Wednesday 8th July - SPAG - Modal Verbs. Look at the Powerpoint presentation and work through the 3 activities in order - This is 2 days' work

Thursday 9th July & Friday 10th July - Discussion Texts. Look at the Powerpoint presentation and note the features of a balanced argument/discussion. Choose one of the topics in the powerpoint to use as your own balanced argument. Use the planning sheets to plan and then write in full. You can use the template for this or can write on lined paper. There are other documents here such as useful phrases and checklists - use them to help!

SCIENCE - For those of you who are able to carry out experiments/investigations at home (with the help of parents of course!) here are a few to try investigating materials that may/may not dissolve. There is a powerpoint as an introduction. For those of you unable to do these investigations there is a home-learning activity to produce a factfile of a scientist who has invented a particular breakthrough object/material.

HISTORY

Last week you were given the task to interview someone who has lived in Britain to talk to them about the changes that have occurred since 1948. You were told that this week's task would be to write a comparison of Britain in 1948 with Britain today. This is your task - think about changes at home, at work, in the population (how people living in Britain have changed) and in technology. Write about these changes and decide which have been for the better and which are for the worse. I include the two powerpoints we are using to help.

Next week's task will be to choose a decade in which you would like to have lived and give reasons why. You can be thinking about this as you write and can consider ideas ahead of next week.

ART - SET UP AND DRAW A STILL-LIFE COMPOSITION

Using any objects from around your house - these can be a common theme (e.g. fruit/vegetables), set up a display to sketch. Think carefully about where the objects reflect light or are in shadow. Here's a video link to help:

RE - Can you order the 10 Commandments according to which shows the greatest commitment to God.

Which commandments do you believe are most important? Which require the greatest commitment to God? Which are the easiest to follow and which are more difficult? Do you think God would find breaking some of the commandments easier to forgive than others? Why? After putting them in order, write about each to say what you feel about it.
